'til we get there. I gotta go to the bathroom. I'm hungry. He's
hitting me. My seatbelt's too tight. I gotta go to the bathroom.
She's touching me again. I'm too hot. I'm too cold. I don't feel too
good. . . "
Ah, these are the blood-curdling,
spine-tingling echoes coming from just about every back seat, on
every highway and in every car heading toward just about every
family vacation across the United States.
If you're anyone who has
been forced to ride for an extended period of time in a car with
kids, you've also been forced to listen to those whiny, baleful
sounds creeping up along the backseat, over your headrest and
banging over and over against the front windshield and into your
aching ears.
ARE WE THERE YET?
You can buy all the DVD's they've ever wanted
to watch, play all the music they want to hear and fill a garbage
bag full of snacks for them to munch on while you drive, but
getting to your destination still isn't going to change. It is
going to be torture. It's almost as much an American tradition as
apple pie and eating a cheese coney in Cincinnati. Besides
they are feral kids out of their natural habitat, restrained
by skin-tight seatbelts and confined to a space so tiny between
suitcases and coolers that even an undernourished mouse would feel a
bit squeamish.
ARE WE THERE YET?
But even if your ride is a bit
trying, your stay doesn't have to be. Believe it or
not, there are actually folks out there who like our kids almost as
much as we do. And better yet, they cater to them when they come to
visit.
So you want to take a vacation with the kids,
huh? Here's a a couple ideas that are a bit more kid-friendly than
the back seat of a moving vehicle and are sure to make your family
getaway a yearly event you'll all enjoy.

Another fun trip that takes about a 20-30 minute drive from
Old Man's Cave is Moonville Tunnel. Said to be haunted, this old railway
tunnel makes a fun adventure. It is also the future site of part of Rails to
Trails.
